Eighth Annual International Conference on Public Policy and Management (2013)

The Eighth Annual International Conference was held from August 12 to 14, 2013. The conference dwelt on the issue of ‘Infrastructure: Hard and soft’. Creation of world-class infrastructure has been recognized as a key priority and a necessary condition for sustaining the growth momentum of the economy. While hard infrastructure refers to the physical components that support our society such as transport, power, communication, land, port, bridges so forth, the soft infrastructure refers to rules and regulations governing various systems, service delivery and institutions required for human development. The three-day international event saw a submission of 165 papers from over 10 countries. Of the 165 papers that were received, about 50 papers were accepted for presentations at the conference. In addition to this, an additional set of 20 papers were presented as short oral presentations.

There were 7 invited panels and 4 round table discussions that were well received by the audience. The Second Policy Hackathon was also organized during the conference. The Second Policy Hackathon witnessed 23 teams presenting specific policy issue talks on health, education, sanitation, poverty and a range of other domains on August 14, 2013. The conference was inaugurated by Shri B K Chaturvedi, Member Planning Commission on August 12, 2013 and the Plenary Address was delivered by Professor Gita Sen, IIM Bangalore on August 13, 2013. The Conference ended with a Valedictory Address by Professor Rahul De, IIM Bangalore, on 14 August, 2013. On August 13, the Centre for Public Policy also hosted 'Gender Narratives from Kampala, Kabul and Bangalore', an informal evening of conversations on global perspectives on gender issues with women members of parliament and government from Uganda and Afghanistan, UN Women India, women's organizations and academicians.

Seventh Annual International Conference on Public Policy and Management (2012)

The Seventh Annual International Conference on Public Policy and Management was held from August 16 to 18, 2012 and this conference focused on 'Societies in Transition'. In addition, two very interesting plenary talks focused on using NSSO data for research. Eminent speakers were invited for discussions on the key theme and in addition to plenary, paper panels and panel discussions; book reading and policy hackathon were added to the conference. This conference brought together 105 speakers from India and Europe and over 198 participants attended the conference. 

Sixth Annual International Conference on Public Policy and Management (2011)

The Sixth Annual International Conference on Public Policy and Management was held from December 28 to 30, 2011 with the theme: ‘Strengthening Institutions and Enhancing Governance’. The world was facing extraordinary challenges and many countries witnessed political revolutions as their people strived to establish popular, accountable, and democratic institutions. Questionable financial management in the public and private sectors had led to economic instability across continents. Policymakers grappled with the challenges of establishing institutions to cope with the rapid changes in demography, environment and the economy. India too was experiencing transformative changes—from popular uprisings aimed at eliminating corruption to the paradigm shift to rights-based public policies that were aimed at ensuring better governance and public service delivery. In that changing global and Indian context, this conference aimed to trigger a rethinking on how institutions functioned and how governance could be improved. 171 participants in attended the sixth conference.

The Fifth Annual Conference on Public Policy and Management (2010)

The Fifth Annual International Conference was held from August 8 to 11, 2010 and the theme of this conference was ‘Beyond the Macroeconomic Crisis – Towards Inclusive Growth and Sustainability’ with sub-themes ‘Inclusive Growth – Strategies and Experiences Regulation’, ‘Institutions and Market Governance’ and ‘Social Sectors and Sustainability’. The conference had a new addition; and that of presentation of papers through Posters. Apart from the contributed papers sessions, there were a set of invited panels on key themes and as well as distinguished key note speaker sessions. With CPP having completed ten years of its existence, there was a roundtable discussion on ‘Public Policy Education Initiatives in India - Sharing Experience and Exploring New Directions’. 

Fourth Annual International Conference on Public Policy and Management (2009)

The Fourth Annual International Conference was held from August 9 to 12, 2009 and the main theme of this conference was ‘Managing Global Economic Challenges’ and the two sub-themes were ‘Policy Responses and Governance Initiatives’ and ‘National and International Governance Challenges’. There was also a well appreciated parallel track with the theme Quantitative Approaches to Public Policy. The conference had 138 papers presented by academics and practitioners from over 21 countries and there were 215 delegates from all over the country who attended the conference. 

Third Annual International Conference on Public Policy and Management (2008)

The Third Annual International Conference was held from August 3 to 6, 2008 and the themes of this conference were Public Private Partnerships and Urban Governance. Since PPPs and Urban Governance had significant field implications, participants were exposed to considerable scrutiny, analysis and new methodologies from clusters of their academic peers, scholars, policymakers, practitioners, government officials, business, and civil society groups. The brainstorming sessions helped them define and enlarge the scope of their own work in ways that could influence policymaking in the future. 

Second Annual International Conference (2007) 

The Second Annual International Conference on Public Policy and Management was held from April 12-14, 2007 with over 120 participants who explored the theme: “Policy in Practice: Effective Policies for Enhancing Rural Livelihood Opportunities”. The Sub-Themes of the Conference were; The National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA), Livelihood Opportunities through Financial Inclusion and other Public Policy Issues. This conference saw 4 invited papers from experts, 23 full papers and 22 presentations in all and 125 delegates from all over the country attended the Conference.

First Annual International Conference (2005)

The First Annual International Conference organized by the Centre for Public Policy (CPP) was held from September 23 to 25, 2005 and the theme of this first conference was “Policy in Practice: Designing and Promoting Effective Institutions”. There were 30 sessions and some of the sub themes were Urban Planning, Urban Finance, Governance and Civil Societies, PPP and Infrastructure, and PPP in sectors like Health, Water, Utilities, etc. There were separate tracks on Urban Transport and Health Care. This was the first in a planned series of annual conferences on public policy and management that brought together over 100 participants with a large number of papers and panels, and the CPP had received over 160 papers from across the world (from 18 countries) and out of this, 115 papers were presented.
